Notes from Nancy

He was a cute little boy with a gap tooth smile. When I asked him what kind of vegetables he liked, he shrugged his shoulders. He was equally noncommittal when I asked if he liked peas. However, when I asked if he wanted to help me pick some peas from the church garden, he shook his head yes. By the time he left, 10 minutes later, he was a veteran pea picker, who had discovered the delights of eating fresh spring peas right off the vine. His mom took some straggly tomato plants that needed a good home, and they reported back later that the tomatoes were thriving and her child is now a quasi vegetable lover. Seeing the peas in the ground, helping to pick them, tasting their freshness, and then nurturing the tomatoes has turned this child, for a season at least, into a gardener and a vegetable liker. This story has been told in many different ways this summer as a variety of children have come to the food pantry and ended up picking tomatoes, beans, and peas from the garden.

Perhaps, like the little boy and pea patch, it just takes new experiences, people who are willing to ask the right questions, and a sense of adventure to make it through! So many people experience new things at Broadway. Those who join together in worship each week find a connection to God through word and sacrament. Those who work on committees together learn to struggle with and support one another as we try to discern God’s will for this place. The staff learns new skills each day – from how to execute a computer program to new ways of working with difficult guests. The guests experience new ways of grace, as they are met with love and acceptance. Community Dinner cooks learn how to translate wonderful family dinners for 8 into Sunday Dinners for 100. And we all learn how to lean on God and each other to navigate our way through this world.

Shalom,
Nancy

Broadway funding alert!

A number of unexpected expenses have depleted our reserves and recent income has not been keeping up with our expenses. We are looking at ways to reduce costs but we are at the moment in real danger of having to cut programs, staff and staff salaries. We need to raise at least $10,000 immediately, but preferably closer to $20,000 to give us the operating cushion we truly need.

We know we have appealed for emergency funds in the past, and many of you have been generous in that regard. We would not be doing this again if the situation were not dire. Plans for a bigger and better silent auction fundraiser for the fall (Oct. 16, save the date!) have been going well, and the Parish Board will be meeting about a more formal fundraising campaign soon, but we can¹t wait for those plans to bear fruit. To pay current salaries and mounting bills, we need more funds now.

Please see the attached appeal letter from Pastor Nancy along with the description of Broadway¹s current ministries. In addition to an immediate contribution, we are asking that you forward this email and these documents along with your own appeal to anyone you think might be inclined to help. Feel free to post it on Facebook.

WE ALSO HAVE A BRAND NEW VEHICLE FOR EASY GIVING: PayPal! Click on the ‘Donate’ button. You can use either a credit card or your PayPal account, if you have one, to make a donation online! Your contribution will immediately go to a Broadway bank account we have set up just for this purpose. Tell your friends, too!

God bless you for your support!

Intadablues Community Concert

The blues band Intadablues has volunteered to hold a neighborhood celebration at Broadway on September 18th.

One Wednesday morning in July they came to promote a People Gotta Eat concert, and came away with a desire to share their music with our neighborhood. So, on September 18th from 4:00-7:00 there will be a concert at Broadway. We are hoping to block off the street and invite folks to sit on the church lawn while the band plays on the front porch. Representatives from the Purple Porch Food Coop may be present to share information about their new food stamp program, and People Gotta Eat will be selling McDonald’s coupon books to interested buyers. Broadway Dinner and Silent Auction Tickets will also be available.

The neighbors are already excited about this event. Please come and celebrate our neighborhood and our church.

Service of Celebration for the Life of John Bell

This Service will be held September 11 at 4:00 in our sanctuary. Sponsored by the Agents of Change support group (part of Companions on the Journey), this event will memorialize and honor the life of a man who made a huge difference in the lives of many folks struggling to recover from addiction, violence, and incarceration.

John, as a staff member of Companions on the Journey, was in our building daily for almost 4 years. He worshiped with us at times, came to Sunday Dinner, and was always a support system for our staff. John’s death in July came as a shock to many of us. We hope, through offering our sanctuary for this service, that the entire community will find a bit more healing and hope.

The book is Nomad: From Islam to America: A Personal Journey Through the Clash of Civilizations by Ayaan Hirsi Ali

The book club will meet at The Chocolate Cafe on September 22, 2010
